Penang DOSH issues prohibition notice after worker struck, killed by falling scaffolding platform

GEORGE TOWN, July 4 — The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Penang branch has issued a prohibition notice to halt work immediately at a Bandar Tanjong Pinang construction site following a fatal accident on July 1.

In a statement, Penang DOSH said the order was issued as investigations are ongoing into the 1.30pm incident involving an Indonesian construction worker who was confirmed dead after being struck by a scaffolding working platform that fell from the eighth floor of a building.

Initial findings showed the victim was believed to have been at a lower level of the building, on an external walkway in front of the workers’ rest area, and was dealing with his employer when the scaffolding fell, striking him and a vehicle belonging to the employer. 

“Following the incident, a prohibition notice was issued to stop related work activities, along with a non-disturbance order to preserve the scene in its original condition until investigations are completed,” read the statement.

Investigations are ongoing, with employers and witnesses being called to assist. The probe focuses on compliance with employers’ duties under Sections 15(1) and 17(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (Act 514) and related regulations.

Penang DOSH said enforcement action will be taken if any violations of legal provisions are found.

It said all workplace accidents, especially those involving loss of life, are taken seriously, and reminded employers, developers, main contractors and subcontractors to ensure all work activities are properly planned and carried out safely. — Bernama
