A LAWMAKER on Tuesday questioned the government’s reported 6.4% inflation rate for June, saying that figures do not reflect the continuing rise in the prices of food, fuel, and other basic commodities.

Party-list Rep. Antonio L. Tinio said teachers, workers, and other consumers continue to bear the burden of high living costs despite the government’s announcement that inflation eased.

“Where is this 6.4% inflation the government is talking about? The prices of food, fuel, and other basic goods continue to rise,” he said in Filipino, adding “Every peso earned by teachers and ordinary Filipinos is losing its value and buying less. That is the real experience of the people — not the figures being presented in government press statements.”

He argued that although transport inflation slowed in June, fuel prices remain elevated, with diesel still costing around P70 to P80 per liter, contributing to higher transportation expenses, electricity rates, and food prices.

Mr. Tinio also disputed the administration’s claim that inflation is easing, noting that core inflation increased to 4.4% from 4.1% while prices of essential commodities remain well above pre-crisis levels.

The lawmaker reiterated his call to increase the Personnel Economic Relief Allowance of teachers and other government employees, saying the allowance has remained at P2,000 since 2009. — Pexcel John Bacon
