Red state candidate drops out after doorbell camera catches him stealing rival's flyer

A Kentucky House candidate ended his campaign after a doorbell camera caught him stealing the flyer of one of his rivals, according to a new report.

Maxwell Morley, a Democrat, was running for the Kentucky state House District 30 seat against incumbent Rep. Daniel Grossberg until he was caught removing one of Grossberg's flyers from a mailbox while he was canvassing, local news station KCCI8 reported. Morley admitted to the theft on Tuesday and dropped out of the race on Wednesday.

It is unclear whether he will face any charges for tampering with the individual's mail, which is a felony, according to the report.

"District 30 deserves a Representative they can trust and believe in. After much reflection, I have decided to end my campaign for State Representative," Morley wrote in a statement to the news outlet. "Campaigns can be demanding and deeply personal, and along the way I lost sight of what mattered most: serving our community with the focus, judgment, and integrity it deserves. For that, I sincerely apologize to those I disappointed or let down."

Morley's departure from the race may not be a big deal to state Democrats, who hold an overwhelmingly small minority in the state House of Representatives. The 100-person chamber is split between 80 Republicans and 20 Democrats.

So far, nine lawmakers have announced their retirement ahead of the Nov. 3 election, including seven Republicans and two Democrats. Five of the lawmakers have retired to run for other offices.

"I am grateful to everyone who supported this campaign, volunteered their time, offered encouragement, and believed in me throughout this process," Morley added in his statement. "I am especially thankful for my family, and I am taking this time to focus on them and move forward privately."
