An economist flagged a gobsmacking detail about the recent deal President Donald Trump's administration struck with the Iranian regime over the weekend that had largely been overlooked.

Henrietta Treyz, director of economic policy at Veda Partners, told CNN's Jake Tapper on "The Lead" that the Trump administration seemed to be hurrying toward a deal with Iran to end the 106-day conflict. On Sunday, the two sides agreed to a deal that would allow the Strait of Hormuz to reopen, which some experts say could provide temporary relief from high energy prices.

Treyz said that the administration's rush to the negotiating table signaled to her that time is running out to fix the economic issues caused by the war.

"The urgency at the White House to sign this deal before it's even released to the public tells me that we are running out of inventory and they are running out of time to keep gas prices below the $5 mark mark, which we're obviously succeeding at right now," she said, referring to the administration's decision to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserves to stabilize the U.S. oil market.

"But time is running out," she warned.

Treyz's comments came at a time when many Americans have said that the cost of living is their number-one issue as the 2026 midterms approach. The most recent economic data showed that inflation has increased by 4.2% over the last 12 months, primarily due to higher energy prices.

Five Michigan Democratic lawmakers, led by Rep. Haley Stevens, sent a letter Thursday to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin opposing a planned Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in Romulus, Michigan.

The bipartisan opposition includes Stevens, Debbie Dingell, Hillary Scholten, Kristen McDonald Rivet, and Shri Thanedar, joining Rep. Rashida Tlaib's efforts against the facility.

The letter challenges ICE's claim that community impact studies and due diligence were completed before purchase, noting that local officials were never consulted, reports Michigan Advance. It also lists environmental concerns, including floodplain and wetlands regulations.

The opposition is bolstered by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and the City of Romulus, filing federal lawsuits to stop development.

Representatives cited conditions at Michigan's existing North Lake Processing Center in Baldwin, where detainee Nenko Gantchev died in December 2025, and ongoing hunger strikes and documented conditions for detainees. U.S. Sens. Elissa Slotkin and Gary Peters received no response to their February letter raising similar concerns.

A pair of Democratic lawmakers are expanding their investigations into the use of presidential pardons in the Trump administration, demanding that Justice Department officials turn over records related to a series of controversial clemency decisions.

"Trump has a documented history of destroying Presidential Records, and it's vitally important to ensure records related to clemency decisions are well maintained," said Sen. Peter Welch (D-VT) and Rep. Dave Min (D-CA) in their letter to the Executive Office of the President (EOP), reported Meidas Touch correspondent Scott MacFarlane.

Their letter demanded all "petitions, applications, or other materials from individuals seeking clemency or their attorneys to EOP staff; any letters of support or other materials provided by third parties in support of a clemency request to EOP staff; any communications between EOP staff and individuals seeking clemency or their attorneys; any internal communications amongst EOP staff regarding these cases; and any recommendations prepared by EOP staff, including those not formally sent to the President but sent or obtained by EOP staff."

Among the many pardons under investigation are those granted to Trevor Milton, an entrepreneur who defrauded investors by lying about his electric and hydrogen-powered truck company, Nikola; Changpeng Zhao, the billionaire founder of crypto exchange Binance who was convicted of money laundering; and Michele Fiore, a pro-MAGA Nevada politician who was convicted of pocketing charity money meant to go to a police memorial.

The news of an investigation into Trump's pardons was first reported in May, as Democrats began investigating whether clemency was being awarded on a "pay-to-play" basis.

All of this is separate from Trump's mass pardon of the January 6 rioters, which caused a wave of anger and controversy on the first day he returned to office.

President Donald Trump's administration came under fire on Monday after a new report revealed that it railroaded antitrust lawyers into approving a MAGA media deal that some observers said could harm consumers.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that Trump administration lawyers were leaning toward challenging Paramount Skydance's proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, which includes CNN. That was until senior leaders at the Department of Justice closed the investigation last Friday, saying the deal would be "good for competition," according to the report.

"Some staffers in the Justice Department’s antitrust division believe the statement was designed to make it harder for state attorneys general to challenge the deal in court, the people said. The investigative staff didn’t participate in writing the statement, the people said," the report reads in part.

Political analysts and observers reacted to the report on social media.

"This is corruption — from corporate lobbying, to the silencing of the media. It’s also clearly bad for our economy and consumers. States must continue to pursue every option to challenge this," Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) posted on X.

"Unreal. Justice Department staff were railroaded again by political interference in the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger review," Lee Hepner, a California-based antitrust lawyer, posted on X.

"The same form of justice that put Ghislaine Maxwell in Club Fed for trafficking children. 100% corruption 100% of the time," David Poland, a political commentator, posted on X.

"WSJ reporting making clear that DOJ decision to clear Paramount/WBD merger had nothing to do with the facts or the law and everything to do with corruption," Alvaro Bedoya, a former FTC commissioner, posted on X.

"DOJ's crony capitalism in blessing the Paramount-Warners deal is such a pile of [expletive] that the division head who blessed the deal immediately resigned," Adam Kovacevich, founder and CEO of Progress Chamber, posted on X.
