Within this comparison, and for readers outside the EEA, the UK and the US, MEXC is our top pick among Bitstamp alternatives on trading cost.
Bitstamp's simple buy screen carries a 1.0% embedded spread on crypto, against 0.0500% taker on MEXC's published spot schedule, which is 600 dollars a year versus 30 dollars on 5,000 dollars of monthly buying.
Bitstamp itself is not closing, and its post-acquisition product build-out is real, but it is licensed for eligible EU customers only.

Key Takeaways
  • Bitstamp is not closing, but its newest derivatives venue is licensed for institutional clients in the EU only.
  • MEXC is our top pick on cost for readers outside the EEA, the UK and the US, at 0.0000% maker and 0.0500% taker.
  • Bitstamp's Basic Trading screen adds a fixed spread of 1.0% on crypto, plus a 4% instant service fee on card purchases.
  • On 5,000 dollars of monthly buying, that is 600 dollars a year through Basic Trading against 30 dollars on MEXC.
  • Kraken Pro's lowest published tier is 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker, above Bitstamp's 0.30% and 0.40%.
  • EEA readers should verify a CASP licence on the ESMA register and UK readers the FCA register, because MEXC serves neither market.

Why MEXC Is Our Top Pick Outside the EEA, the UK and the US

First, Check Whether This Section Applies to You

MEXC's own support guide states that it reserves the right to refuse trading or registration from users in North Korea, Cuba, Sudan, Iran, Mainland China, Singapore, the United States, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, the Russian-controlled regions of Ukraine and Canada.
MEXC also holds no MiCA authorisation and does not appear on the ESMA register, so it does not serve EEA residents after the transition period closed on 1 July 2026.
If you are reading this from Amsterdam, London or New York, skip to the regional sections further down, because the recommendation in this section is not available to you.
Everyone else should check the current prohibited jurisdictions list in MEXC's own account guide before going further.

What Bitstamp's Simple Buy Screen Actually Costs

There is a second price on Bitstamp that the fee headline does not show.
Bitstamp runs two ways to buy.
The Pro order book charges 0.30% maker and 0.40% taker below 10,000 dollars in 30-day volume, which is defensible if unremarkable.
Basic Trading, the one-click buy screen, is priced differently.
According to Bitstamp's unified fee schedule valid from 1 September 2026, the displayed Basic Trading price includes a fixed spread of 1.0% on crypto-assets and 0.5% on stablecoins, and an additional variable volatility spread of up to 1.0% on crypto-assets can apply during volatile periods.
Funding that purchase with a card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal adds a 4% instant service fee on top.
So the headline 0.40% is not what a Basic Trading buyer pays.
MEXC's published spot schedule adds no separate spread tier on top of the order book price, though third-party card providers set their own fees on fiat purchases.
The MEXC fee page shows 0.0000% maker and 0.0500% taker as the standard spot range, falling to 0.0400% taker when MX deduction is enabled, which applies a 20% discount.
Those rates are not a promotional headline attached to one pair, and the same page lists them across more than 2,000 spot pairs, spread over 209 pages at ten pairs per page when retrieved on 1 September 2026.

The Same 5,000 Dollars a Month, Priced Two Ways

Take a reader who buys 5,000 dollars of crypto a month and holds it, which is an ordinary pattern rather than an active-trader fantasy.
On Bitstamp's Pro order book at 0.40% taker, that costs 20 dollars a month, or 240 dollars over a year.
On Bitstamp's Basic Trading screen at the 1.0% fixed spread, the same 5,000 dollars costs 50 dollars a month, or 600 dollars a year, before the volatility spread and before any card fee.
On MEXC at 0.0500% taker, it costs 2.50 dollars a month, or 30 dollars a year.
The gap between the Basic Trading route and the MEXC order book is twenty times over a full year, and it comes entirely from where the cost is disclosed rather than from any difference in what you bought.

The Product Gap Is Geographic, Not Technical

Bitstamp's July 2026 multi-asset perpetuals are a genuinely strong product.
They are also unavailable to you unless you are an institutional client on its MiFID II authorised European venue.
MEXC's futures fee page carries the same asset classes without that gate.
Gold, WTI oil and US equity perpetuals such as TSLA all appear on the USDT-M futures list alongside crypto, with maker rates from 0.000% to 0.010% and taker rates from 0.010% to 0.040% depending on the pair, across 104 pages of markets retrieved on 1 September 2026.
For a Bitstamp user in São Paulo, Lagos or Ho Chi Minh City, that is the whole argument in one sentence.
The sophistication you have been reading about in Bitstamp's announcements is licensed for somebody else.
Fee boundaries worth knowing before you assume zero.
MEXC's fee page states that maker and taker rates may vary with platform events or user region, so your actual rate should be checked against your own trade history.
Pairs carrying a zero-fee tag are marked individually rather than platform-wide, and some pairs are excluded from MX fee deductions entirely.

What Actually Changed After Robinhood Bought Bitstamp

The deal was announced in June 2024 and closed on 2 June 2025 for 200 million dollars in cash.
The acquisition handed Robinhood an immediate international footprint, including more than fifty active crypto licences and registrations globally, plus an institutional client base.
CryptoSlate reported that Robinhood said at closing Bitstamp had more than 500,000 funded retail customers and about 5,000 funded institutional customers, with most of its volume coming from institutions.
For account holders, the visible change has been gradual.
Balances, logins and the fee schedule carried over, and the exchange kept operating under its existing regulatory permissions.

The Integration Timeline So Far

June 2024: Robinhood announces the acquisition.
October 2024: Bitstamp Financial Services receives a MiFID Multilateral Trading Facility licence from Slovenia's Securities Market Agency, which Cointelegraph reported as clearing the way for crypto derivatives including perpetual swaps.
May 2025: Bitstamp Europe S.A. becomes the first exchange authorised in Luxembourg as a crypto-asset service provider under MiCA, granted by the CSSF.
2 June 2025: the acquisition closes.
April 2026: crypto perpetual futures reach general launch for eligible EU retail and institutional clients, with ten markets and leverage capped at 10x, per Bitstamp's official product announcement.
July 2026: multi-asset perpetual futures arrive for institutional clients, covering FX, equity indices and commodities alongside crypto from a single pool of collateral on a MiFID II authorised European venue.
31 July 2026: Robinhood UK Ltd joins the FCA register as a cryptoasset firm.
The Block reported that the UK service launched with no trading, account maintenance or custody fees, while charging a 0.1% foreign exchange fee that rises to 0.3% on certain weekend conversions, and that crypto held through Bitstamp UK falls outside the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.

What Has Not Been Announced

Three things sit unresolved as of 1 September 2026, and none of them should be guessed at.
There is no public announcement that EU retail accounts will migrate into a Robinhood-branded app.
There is no announced retirement date for the Bitstamp brand or the Bitstamp interface.
There is no announced change to the published spot fee schedule outside the UK, where clients accessing Bitstamp through the Robinhood platform pay nothing under a separate carve-out in the fee schedule itself.

Where Each Platform Can Actually Take You

This is the step most comparison articles skip, and it decides everything that follows.
Bitstamp's customer base sits mostly in the EEA, the UK and the US, and those are the three markets where the widest global exchanges are least available.
MEXC is one of them, and we would rather say so in a chart than bury it in a footnote.
MEXC had already suspended fiat services for residents of the Netherlands from 20 March 2026, which it announced at the time.

Bitstamp Alternatives Compared: The Six Dimensions That Decide It

Six dimensions decide this choice, and asset counts are not among them, because every platform below lists more than a typical buyer will ever touch.
What separates them is the price of a simple purchase, whether derivatives are reachable from where you live, how reserves are evidenced, and whether you can open an account at all.

Every Bitstamp Alternative, Reviewed One by One

Kraken

Kraken is a frequent recommendation for Bitstamp users looking to switch.
The recommendation holds above a certain volume, but not below it.
Kraken's current published Pro schedule opens at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker for tier 1, and reaches 0.22% maker and 0.38% taker only once 30-day volume passes 10,000 dollars.
Below that threshold, switching from Bitstamp to Kraken raises your trading cost.
Benefits.
  • Kraken pioneered exchange proof of reserves and continues to publish attestations, which Bitstamp does not.
  • Its EU entity is authorised in Ireland, and it holds permissions in the US and the UK, so it covers all three of Bitstamp's core markets.
  • Kraken Pro, margin, futures, staking and tokenised equities sit behind one account, which is a wider product set than Bitstamp offers outside the EU.
  • A newer tiering rule lets assets held on the platform qualify you for a better rate even without trading volume.
Limitations.
  • Entry-tier pricing is the highest in this comparison.
  • The simple app's Instant Buy adds roughly 1% plus a spread, so the cheap tiers only exist on Pro.
  • Small crypto withdrawals can carry fixed fees that are punishing as a percentage.
  • State-level gaps remain in the US.

Coinbase

Coinbase is the closest match to what Bitstamp users say they valued, which is a listed, heavily supervised operator with a conservative product line.
Benefits.
Limitations.
  • Entry-tier Advanced Trade pricing is well above OKX and MEXC.
  • Token listings are narrower than global exchanges.
  • Derivatives access is limited and depends heavily on jurisdiction.
  • Reserve evidence follows a public-company model rather than the crypto-native attestations some readers now expect.

OKX

OKX is the strongest all-round option for a Bitstamp user who wants lower fees without leaving a MiCA-authorised venue.
Benefits.
  • Level 1 spot pricing of 0.080% maker and 0.100% taker undercuts Bitstamp, Kraken and Coinbase by a wide margin.
  • It publishes zk-STARK proof of reserves monthly, which is the most technically rigorous approach in this comparison.
  • Its EU entity holds an MFSA authorisation in Malta, and it runs perpetuals for EU clients through a separate licensed venue.
  • Product depth covers spot, futures, options and earn in one account.
Limitations.
  • The interface is a step up in complexity from Bitstamp's.
  • US access is limited to a separate spot-only entity and is blocked in several states.
  • Fee discounts are tied partly to holding OKB, which introduces token price exposure.
  • Fiat rails are less polished than Bitstamp's SEPA and ACH setup.

Bitvavo

Bitvavo is the narrow answer that fits one reader precisely, which is a euro-based EEA retail buyer.
Benefits.
Limitations.
  • The EU entity is spot only, so there are no derivatives at all.
  • Coverage is essentially European, which makes it useless to a Bitstamp user in Asia or Latin America.
  • Taker pricing at 0.25% is higher than OKX and MEXC.
  • Support is email-based without round-the-clock live chat.

EEA Readers: Your MiCA-Authorised Options

Since 1 July 2026 only firms holding a CASP authorisation may serve EU and EEA clients, and that authorisation is published on the ESMA register.
Bitstamp already clears this bar through Bitstamp Europe S.A. in Luxembourg, so leaving is a preference rather than a necessity.
If you do want to move, the like-for-like options are Coinbase in Luxembourg, Kraken in Ireland, OKX in Malta and Bitvavo in the Netherlands.
Check the entity name and the authorisation on ESMA's MiCA pages rather than trusting a marketing page, because a group can hold a licence through one subsidiary while operating other services from an unlicensed one.
MEXC is not on that register and is not an option for you.

UK Readers: What the FCA Register Actually Covers

Bitstamp UK Ltd holds a cryptoasset registration with the FCA, and Robinhood UK Ltd joined the same register on 31 July 2026 under reference 823590.
That listing covers arranging and transmitting cryptoasset orders, not operating an exchange or holding customer cryptoassets, which is why UK trades route through Bitstamp.
That registration confirms anti-money-laundering supervision.
It does not mean your crypto is protected the way a bank deposit is, and The Block noted at the UK launch that holdings through Bitstamp UK are not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.
If you are in the UK, stay with an FCA-registered firm and verify it directly on the FCA register.
MEXC does not serve UK residents.

Where Bitstamp Still Wins

A comparison that cannot name the other side's strengths is an advertisement.
Bitstamp's fiat plumbing is the best in this group, with free SEPA and ACH deposits, free ACH withdrawals, a 3 euro SEPA withdrawal, a 2 pound Faster Payments withdrawal and free PayNow withdrawals in Singapore, all published in one schedule.
Its licensing depth is unusual, running six regional entities under the CSSF, the FCA, NYDFS and FinCEN, the Monetary Authority of Singapore, Slovenia's Securities Market Agency and the BVI FSC.
It has operated since 2011, and when its operational wallets were breached in January 2015 for under 19,000 BTC, it covered the loss from cold storage reserves and honoured customer balances in full.
Robinhood said at closing that Bitstamp brought more than 500,000 funded retail customers and about 5,000 funded institutional customers.
Its EU derivatives venue is properly licensed under MiFID II rather than offshore, which for a European professional is a real advantage that no offshore exchange can offer.
And in the UK, clients reaching Bitstamp through the Robinhood platform pay no trading fees at all, which no platform in the comparison table beats.

The MEXC View

MEXC publishes this article, and we compete with every platform named in it, so read the recommendation with that in mind.
Our position is narrow on purpose.
On the specific question of what a spot purchase costs, MEXC's published rates are the lowest in this comparison, and the gap against Bitstamp's Basic Trading screen is large enough that it changes outcomes over a year.
On almost everything else a Bitstamp user might care about, we would not claim the win.
Bitstamp's fiat rails are better than ours.
Bitstamp's regulatory position in Europe is better than ours, and that is not a close call, since it holds a MiCA authorisation and we do not.
Coinbase's spread disclosure at checkout is a practice we respect.
OKX's zk-STARK reserve proofs are more rigorous than what most exchanges publish, including the industry norm we sit within.
If you are in the EEA, the UK or the US, we are not competing for your account, and saying otherwise would be dishonest.

How to Move Your Crypto Off Bitstamp

Step 1: Decide what actually moves.
Selling to fiat and wiring cash is usually more expensive than withdrawing the asset itself, because you pay a trading fee on the way out and again on the way back in.
Step 2: Match the network on both ends.
Pick the withdrawal network on Bitstamp that your destination exchange actually supports for that asset, and copy the deposit address from the destination rather than from a saved note.
Assets such as XRP and XLM require a destination tag or memo, and omitting it is the single most common way people lose a transfer.
Step 3: Test with a small amount first.
Send a small transfer, confirm it credits, then send the rest.
Bitstamp charges no fee on crypto deposits and passes through network fees on withdrawals, and it applies a 25 euro or dollar minimum on fiat balances returned at account closure, so sweeping the last few euros out before closing is worth the two minutes.
If MEXC is available where you live, our KYC guide covers what verification unlocks before your first deposit lands.

Which Alternative Fits You

You buy crypto monthly and hold it, and you live outside the EEA, the UK and the US.
MEXC is the clearest answer in this comparison, because the difference between a 1.0% embedded spread and a 0.0500% taker fee compounds every month you keep buying.
Check the current restricted regions list first, then open an account and move one small test transfer before the rest.
You are an EEA resident who wants MiCA protection.
Stay on Bitstamp or move to Bitvavo, Coinbase, Kraken or OKX through their authorised EU entities, and verify the entity on the ESMA register.
You are in the UK.
Use an FCA-registered firm, and note that the Robinhood route to Bitstamp currently carries no trading fee.
You are in the US.
Use a US-licensed platform such as Coinbase or Kraken, and treat any offshore exchange soliciting your business as a warning sign rather than a bargain.
You want EU-regulated multi-asset perpetuals.
Bitstamp is now one of the few venues that offers them under MiFID II, so leaving would cost you the thing you want.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Robinhood buy Bitstamp?
Yes.
Robinhood closed the 200 million dollar cash acquisition on 2 June 2025, and Bitstamp now operates as Bitstamp by Robinhood.

Is Bitstamp shutting down?
No.
As of 1 September 2026 there is no announced closure or brand retirement, and Bitstamp continues to operate under its own licences.

What happens to my Bitstamp account after the acquisition?
Nothing has been announced that changes existing balances, logins or the published fee schedule outside the UK.
UK clients reaching Bitstamp through Robinhood pay no trading fees.

Is Bitstamp still licensed in the EU?
Yes.
Bitstamp Europe S.A. holds a MiCA CASP authorisation from Luxembourg's CSSF, granted in May 2025 and passportable across the EEA.

What are the best Bitstamp alternatives in 2026?
It depends where you live.
OKX and MEXC lead on cost, Coinbase and Kraken cover the US and UK, and Bitvavo suits euro-based EEA buyers.

Does Bitstamp charge higher fees than other exchanges?
On the Pro order book its 0.40% entry taker sits mid-pack and undercuts Kraken and Coinbase.
On the Basic Trading screen the 1.0% embedded spread is far above most rivals.

How many coins does Bitstamp list?
Bitstamp lists over one hundred assets, and the exact roster differs by regional entity because US listings are narrowed by state-level rules.

Can I use MEXC in the EU or the UK?
No.
MEXC holds no MiCA authorisation and does not serve EEA residents after 1 July 2026, and the United Kingdom appears on its prohibited jurisdictions list.

How do I move my crypto off Bitstamp?
Withdraw the asset itself rather than selling to fiat, match the network on both ends, and include the memo or destination tag where the asset requires one.
Send a small test transfer first.

Risk and Compliance Notice

Crypto-asset trading carries significant risk, and you can lose the full value of your position.
Perpetual futures and leveraged products amplify both gains and losses, and a position can be liquidated in full during ordinary market volatility.
Availability, product access, fees and verification requirements vary by jurisdiction and change without notice, so confirm your own eligibility on each platform's current terms before acting.
Nothing here is investment advice, and this article does not solicit residents of any jurisdiction where the platforms discussed are not permitted to operate.
