MEXC is our top pick over Bitfinex for breadth-first traders outside restricted regions in this comparison: 1,641 coins and 2,032 spot pairs on CoinGecko against Bitfinex's 66 and 142, plus roughly 1,000 USDT-M perpetual pairs against a few dozen.
Bitfinex is the cheaper venue on execution, charging 0% maker and 0% taker on every product since December 17, 2025, and neither platform serves US persons, so the right answer depends on whether you need range or price.

Key Takeaways
  • MEXC is our top pick over Bitfinex in this comparison for traders who need breadth and listing pace; Bitfinex is the pick for cost-first traders on major pairs.
  • Bitfinex has charged 0% maker and 0% taker on spot, margin, derivatives, OTC and securities since December 17, 2025, while MEXC charges 0% maker and 0.05% taker on spot.
  • CoinGecko tracked 1,641 coins and 2,032 spot pairs on MEXC against 66 coins and 142 pairs on Bitfinex on September 3, 2026.
  • MEXC offers roughly 1,000 USDT-M perpetual pairs with up to 500x on BTCUSDT and ETHUSDT; Bitfinex offers a few dozen contracts at up to 100x plus 10x margin funded by its peer-to-peer market.
  • MEXC's API futures orders carry a separate 0.06% maker and 0.08% taker schedule, so an algorithmic futures desk pays less on Bitfinex.
  • MEXC publishes a monthly Hacken-audited proof of reserves; Bitfinex's case rests on thirteen years of operation, the 2016 breach repaid by April 2017 and an El Salvador licence granted in May 2026.

Why Bitfinex Users Look Elsewhere in 2026

Fees stopped being the reason in December 2025.
Bitfinex now charges nothing to make or take on any product, so a trader who leaves does so for range, not price.
CoinGecko tracked 66 coins on Bitfinex on September 3, 2026, and the exchange's own announcements describe its derivatives venue in the tens of contracts rather than the hundreds.
Verification is the second friction: every account created since November 9, 2022 needs at least Basic Plus verification to use the platform, margin and derivatives need Intermediate, and fiat rails need Full.
The third is listing pace, because a token that trends on-chain this week will usually show up on a broad-listing exchange before it shows up on a curated one.
This article measures the gap in both directions and tells you exactly what a MEXC account costs you that a Bitfinex account does not.

The MEXC View

MEXC publishes this article and has a commercial interest in your choice, so read what follows with that in mind.
Our view is direct: if the tokens you trade are not all on Bitfinex, MEXC is the better home in 2026, because it lists twenty-five times as many coins on CoinGecko, runs roughly 1,000 perpetual pairs against a few dozen, and publishes a monthly reserve report with an auditor's name on it.
We also think Bitfinex is the honest answer for a cost-first trader on majors, and we say so plainly below rather than hide the zero-fee schedule behind a fee table that favours us.
Here is the part that does not favour us.
Bitfinex is cheaper on every execution fee, because zero is lower than 0.05%.
Bitfinex's BTC/USD book held $10.65 million of bids and $10.69 million of asks within 2% of mid on the day we checked, deeper than MEXC's BTC/USDT book on both sides.
Bitfinex offers a peer-to-peer margin funding market, scaled and trailing-stop order types, and an API that professional desks have built against since 2012, and MEXC has no funding market at all.
Where MEXC wins is range: coins, pairs, perpetual contracts and the speed at which new tokens arrive, and each figure below carries its source and retrieval date.
Our full review methodology is public, and so is our own list of reasons to switch away from MEXC.

Why MEXC Is Our Top Pick for Breadth-First Traders: The Evidence First

Three things decide it: the size of the market list, the range of contracts and leverage on it, and a reserve report that someone independent has checked, and each comes with a number and a retrieval date.

Coins, listings and perpetuals: a market list twenty-five times wider

CoinGecko tracked 1,641 coins across 2,032 spot pairs on MEXC on September 3, 2026, and 66 coins across 142 pairs on Bitfinex.
Bitfinex's own December 2025 announcement described more than 250 spot pairs and more than 60 perpetual contracts, so the exact count depends on the tracker, but the order of magnitude does not.
New Bitfinex perpetuals in July and August 2026 launched at 100x for Injective, LayerZero, Jito and XDC and at 20x for Allora, DeXe and Kaito, according to Bitfinex's product notices.
For a breadth-first trader the practical test is simple: list the ten tokens you traded last month and check how many exist on each exchange.

Leverage and contract range

MEXC ran roughly 1,000 USDT-M perpetual pairs at our August 20, 2026 count, with 500x available on BTCUSDT and ETHUSDT under an announcement from April 23, 2025 that also names the countries excluded from that tier.
Leverage of that size can erase a position on a small move, and MEXC's futures trading risks guide sets out the maintenance-margin ladder you should read first.
Bitfinex caps derivatives at 100x and margin at 10x, and its new contracts in July and August 2026 launched at 100x or 20x, so the gap is widest exactly where a high-leverage trader looks first.

Reserves with an auditor's name on them

MEXC publishes a monthly Merkle-tree proof of reserves that lets you confirm your own balance sits in the liability set, with each snapshot audited by Hacken and published on the MEXC Proof of Reserves page.
The August 2026 report showed BTC at 288% covering 4,282.20 BTC in user holdings, USDT at 115%, USDC at 114% and ETH at 113%, per the audited release dated August 14, 2026.
CoinGecko's reserve field for Bitfinex draws on wallets tracked by DefiLlama, and we did not find a monthly audited report with a named auditor on Bitfinex's site during this review.
CoinGecko's CORE3 cybersecurity score gives MEXC three stars and Bitfinex two, neither exchange has a recorded incident in the past twelve months, and CoinGecko's overall Trust Score is 10 out of 10 for MEXC and 8 out of 10 for Bitfinex.
Bitfinex's counter is its record: thirteen years of continuous operation, the 2016 breach repaid in full, and a digital asset service provider licence in El Salvador granted in May 2026, none of which MEXC can match on longevity.
MEXC does not serve residents of the US, the UK, Canada, the EEA, Singapore or Hong Kong, so the button below is for readers outside those regions.

MEXC Wins on Breadth and Listing Pace, Bitfinex Wins on Price and the Pro Stack

The table above splits the six dimensions three to three, and the split maps cleanly onto two kinds of trader.
Choose MEXC if the tokens you want to trade are not on Bitfinex, which on the numbers above describes most of the market, and if you want perpetual contracts on more than a few dozen names.
Choose Bitfinex if your book is BTC, ETH, XRP and a handful of majors, you lend or borrow through the funding market, or you run an algorithmic desk where a 0.05% taker fee compounds into real money.
Neither is available to US persons, and MEXC additionally excludes the UK, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong and the EEA, so the availability section below comes before any decision.

Bitfinex Fees vs MEXC Fees: What 0% on Everything Really Means

The pain point for a cost-first trader is that Bitfinex set the bar at zero.
On December 17, 2025, Bitfinex announced that all crypto spot and margin pairs, perpetual derivatives, spot securities pairs and OTC trading would run on a zero-fee basis for both makers and takers, with no volume threshold or token requirement, and its derivatives notices through August 2026 repeat that no trading fees apply to any contract.
MEXC's standard spot schedule is 0% maker and 0.05% taker, with a 20% MX deduction that brings the taker side to 0.04%.
On $500,000 of monthly spot volume split evenly between limit and market orders, Bitfinex charges $0 and MEXC charges $125, or $100 with MX.
MEXC's counter is that 600 or more of its spot pairs were priced at 0% on both sides when we counted them on August 20, 2026, so a trader who stays inside that set also pays $0.
On futures, MEXC's standard web and app rate is 0.010% maker and 0.040% taker, which is $125 on the same $500,000, or $50 on BTCUSDT under its Special Rate of 0.000% and 0.020%, and 336 of its roughly 1,000 USDT-M pairs were priced at 0% on both sides at the same count.
Orders sent through MEXC's API on futures follow a separate schedule of 0.06% maker and 0.08% taker effective June 1, 2026, which is $350 on that volume, against $0 on Bitfinex.
That single line is the clearest reason an algorithmic futures desk stays on Bitfinex, and we would rather print it than have you find it on your first statement.
Crypto withdrawal fees on both platforms are fixed per asset and network, and Bitfinex charges a percentage fee on bank wires, so a full cost comparison should include how you move money in and out.
The same schedules applied to $500,000 of monthly volume show where the money actually goes.

Feature Mapping: What Each Bitfinex Product Becomes on MEXC

Bitfinex users have a specific set of tools, so here is where each one lands on MEXC, including the one that has no equivalent at all.

Depth, API and the Pro Stack: Where Bitfinex Is Stronger

Bitfinex's BTC/USD pair showed $10.65 million of bids and $10.69 million of asks within 2% of mid on CoinGecko on September 3, 2026.
MEXC's BTC/USDT pair showed $8.23 million and $7.32 million on the same day.
Both exchanges earn CoinGecko's API grade A, but Bitfinex's v2 API, scaled orders, trailing stops and paper-trading sandbox are the tools that professional desks cite when they explain why they stay.
The margin funding market has no counterpart on MEXC, and for a lender who wants to set a rate and a term, that alone decides the comparison.
Bitfinex also runs an OTC desk for large block trades and supports fiat deposits in USD, EUR and GBP for fully verified accounts.
One number that cuts the other way: CoinGecko's average bid-ask spread across all tracked pairs was 4.059% for Bitfinex and 0.885% for MEXC, which reflects thin books on Bitfinex's smaller pairs rather than on its majors.

Bitfinex Hack, Repayment and Licences: The 2016 to 2026 Timeline

We list the public record for both platforms in date order, using regulator and mainstream-media sources and quoting the exchanges' own statements as plain text.
  • August 2, 2016: 119,756 BTC were stolen from Bitfinex; the exchange issued BFX tokens to affected users and had redeemed them in full by April 2017, per CoinDesk reporting at the time.
  • February 8, 2022: the US Department of Justice announced the seizure of roughly 94,000 BTC tied to the 2016 breach and charged Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan.
  • November 2024: Lichtenstein was sentenced to five years and Morgan to eighteen months, as reported by CoinDesk.
  • December 17, 2025: Bitfinex announced permanent zero maker and taker fees across spot, margin, derivatives, securities and OTC trading.
  • May 12, 2026: Bitfinex announced a digital asset service provider licence in El Salvador, which CoinGecko now lists as its regulatory credential.
  • September 1, 2026: Bitfinex Securities listed tokenised notes tracking Strategy, Metaplanet, H100 and Capital B, per its announcement and industry press.
MEXC's record over the same window shows no security incident in CoinGecko's twelve-month incident field.
CoinGecko's regulation field records only an international crypto licence in Comoros for MEXC, which CoinGecko classifies as a defined but unproven framework.

Availability: Who Can Use Which

Bitfinex's terms exclude residents of the United States and Ontario, individual UK customers and the sanctioned territories, and its derivatives launched in 2019 excluding US, Canadian and Swiss residents.
MEXC's user agreement prohibits the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Hong Kong, mainland China, North Korea, Cuba, Iran, Sudan and the Russian-controlled regions of Ukraine, and MEXC said it would stop serving EEA users after the July 1, 2026 MiCA transition deadline; the full list is in our restricted countries guide.
Japan is a grey zone for MEXC: the website is reachable, the app is not in Japanese app stores, and the Financial Services Agency lists MEXC among unregistered operators.
We did not verify Bitfinex's MiCA status on the ESMA register during this review, so EEA readers should check that register directly.

Who Should Choose MEXC, and Who Should Stay on Bitfinex

Pick MEXC if you trade beyond the majors, want perpetuals on hundreds of names, or want a reserve report with an auditor's name on it: your next step is to check the ten tokens you traded last month against MEXC's markets page, then read the MEXC Review 2026 for the catch we disclose there.
Stay on Bitfinex if you trade majors at size, lend through the funding market, or route futures orders by API, because zero beats 0.08% every single day.
US persons cannot use either platform, and readers in the UK, Canada, the EEA, Singapore or Hong Kong cannot use MEXC, so a licensed local platform is the only option their terms leave open.
