Micron's latest fiscal Q3 2026 results illustrate the scale of that shift. Revenue reached $41.46 billion, compared with $9.30 billion a year earlier, while GAAP gross margin reached 84.6%. The company guided to approximately $50 billion of fiscal Q4 revenue and an approximately 86% gross margin.

Instead, the more useful question is:

What exactly does Micron sell, where does HBM fit, and why has memory become so important to the AI infrastructure economy?

Micron Is a Memory Company, Not a GPU Company

NVIDIA and Micron participate in the same AI system, but they do different jobs.

A simplified AI server looks like this:

Compute processors

→ perform mathematical operations

High-bandwidth memory

→ feeds large amounts of data rapidly to accelerators

System DRAM

→ provides working memory for servers and orchestration

NAND / SSD storage

→ stores models, databases and other persistent data

Micron participates across several of those memory and storage layers.

It does not design the GPU itself.

What Is DRAM?

DRAM, or dynamic random-access memory, is volatile memory used when a computing system needs fast access to actively used information.

“Volatile” means the contents disappear when power is removed.

DRAM is widely used in:

  • Data-center servers
  • PCs
  • Smartphones
  • Graphics systems
  • Automotive systems
  • Industrial computing

Micron reported $28.58 billion of DRAM revenue in fiscal 2025, before the current AI memory acceleration became even more pronounced.

Traditional server DDR memory remains important even in the HBM era because an AI system needs much more than the memory attached directly to a GPU.

What Is NAND?

NAND is different.

It is non-volatile, meaning stored data remains after the device loses power.

NAND is the underlying technology used in many:

  • Data-center SSDs
  • PC SSDs
  • Smartphone storage products
  • Automotive storage systems
  • Enterprise and industrial devices

For AI infrastructure, NAND is important because training and inference systems need enormous amounts of persistent storage.

Micron's 2026 AI portfolio makes this relationship increasingly clear: the company is selling not only HBM but also high-performance data-center SSDs designed to support AI workloads.

HBM Is Still DRAM — But Built for a Different Problem

High-bandwidth memory is a specialized form of DRAM designed to move much larger amounts of data between memory and high-performance processors.

Instead of placing conventional memory chips farther away on a board, HBM vertically stacks DRAM dies and positions them very close to the processor.

The reason is bandwidth.

AI accelerators can perform extraordinary numbers of operations per second. If memory cannot deliver enough data, expensive compute cores wait.

That problem is often called the memory wall.

Why HBM Matters So Much to AI

Imagine a restaurant with 100 chefs but only one person delivering ingredients to the kitchen.

Hiring faster chefs does not solve the bottleneck.

AI computing faces a similar problem.

A faster GPU can only produce its theoretical performance if:

  • Enough memory is available
  • Data arrives quickly enough
  • Power consumption remains manageable

HBM addresses that bottleneck.

Micron's current HBM4 product uses a 2,048-bit interface and provides more than 2.8 TB/s of bandwidth per stack, more than double the bandwidth of the previous generation according to Micron's product specifications.

Micron HBM4 Is Already in Volume Production

This is no longer only a future roadmap.

Micron announced in March 2026 that its 36GB 12-high HBM4 had entered high-volume production and was designed for NVIDIA's Vera Rubin platform.

By fiscal Q3, Micron confirmed that HBM4 volume shipments were underway for its lead customer's platform, while qualification samples had been delivered to additional customers. The company is also developing HBM4E, with volume production expected in calendar 2027.

Micron Now Organizes Its Business Around Four Markets

One reason older explanations of Micron feel dated is that the company has reorganized how it presents the business.

This structure says something important about the company.

Micron is no longer well described as simply a PC-memory supplier.

Cloud Memory Is Now a Major Business in Its Own Right

Micron's Cloud Memory Business Unit generated approximately $13.8 billion in fiscal Q3 revenue, with an 83% gross margin.

Its Core Data Center Business Unit generated another $11.5 billion, with an 87% gross margin.

Together, the two data-center-oriented units represented well over half of quarterly revenue.

That shift is central to the current MU investment thesis.

AI is not merely adding another product to Micron's portfolio. It is changing the company's revenue mix.

AI Needs More Than HBM

HBM receives the headlines because it sits next to the accelerator.

But the broader opportunity is larger.

Micron describes an AI memory hierarchy in which:

  • HBM supports high-speed accelerator workloads
  • DDR and LPDDR provide system memory
  • SSDs store large datasets and persistent model information

Micron's June COMPUTEX presentation explicitly described memory and storage as a multi-layer architecture for improving AI-system performance rather than as isolated semiconductor products.

That matters because the total value of memory inside an AI data center can grow even if investors focus only on HBM headlines.

Why Micron's Business Has Historically Been Cyclical

Memory products require enormous semiconductor fabrication investments.

The industry has historically followed a familiar pattern:

Demand strengthens

Memory prices rise

Manufacturers expand capacity

Supply catches up

Prices weaken

Margins fall

Capital spending slows

Supply tightens again

That cycle is one reason Micron's historical earnings have been much more volatile than those of many software companies.

AI does not automatically eliminate that cycle.

But 2026 Is Testing Whether the Cycle Is Changing

Micron is now signing multi-year Strategic Customer Agreements, or SCAs.

At the latest earnings call, Micron said it had signed 16 agreements, generally containing binding volume commitments. Fourteen of those agreements represented approximately $100 billion of cumulative minimum-price revenue over their remaining terms, while Micron expects approximately $22 billion of cash deposits and related financial commitments from the agreements signed so far.

That does not mean Micron has already earned $100 billion.

What it may mean is that part of the future memory business is becoming more contractually visible than in previous cycles.

What Sarah Chen Thinks Has Changed in the Micron Story

According to Sarah Chen, MEXC senior crypto industry analyst, one of the most important changes in Micron's 2026 story is that AI demand is affecting both sides of the memory business at once. HBM creates unusually high-value demand, while AI servers also need large quantities of conventional DRAM and storage. That makes the current cycle broader than an isolated HBM product boom. Chen also believes Micron's 84.6% fiscal Q3 gross margin deserves more attention than the headline revenue growth. Semiconductor revenue can rise simply because more units are sold, but an extraordinary increase in gross margin indicates a combination of stronger pricing, tighter supply and favorable product mix.
