OpenAI is launching its first overseas applied AI lab in Singapore through a $234 million partnership that is expected to create more than 200 technical jobs.

OpenAI is launching its first applied AI lab outside the US in Singapore through a multiyear partnership with the Ministry of Digital Development and Information, supported by more than $234 million in funding.

The AI company said Tuesday that more than 200 technical roles will be added through the new lab over the next few years, making Singapore one of OpenAI’s global hubs for Forward Deployed Engineers (FDE), technical specialists who work directly with organizations to implement AI systems.

“Through OpenAI for Singapore, we want to help more organisations benefit from frontier AI, support the next generation of local AI talent, and widen access to these tools across the country,” Denise Dresser, the company’s chief revenue officer, said.

The move comes as Singapore continues its push into AI. The country has also formed a healthcare collaboration with Google DeepMind, while Nvidia is establishing its own AI research lab in the city-state.

OpenAI first established an office in Singapore in 2024.

OpenAI Expands Singapore Presence With New AI Training Programs

The initiative, called “OpenAI for Singapore,” will focus on deploying frontier AI across public services, finance, healthcare, and digital infrastructure. Talent development and broader access for startups and small businesses will also be targeted under the program.

OpenAI will collaborate with the Ministry of Education and GovTech on AI learning tools, including support for mother tongue language education. An FDE training program will also be launched, and the company will join National AI Impact Programme to help develop skills across the broader technology workforce.

For smaller players, accelerator programs for AI-native startups and workshops for micro-entrepreneurs and SMEs are planned by the company.

OpenAI Strengthens Global Partnerships with Multiple Countries

OpenAI is forming similar government partnerships around the world. Over the weekend, Malta signed a first-of-its-kind agreement with OpenAI to provide free ChatGPT Plus access to citizens who complete a government-backed AI literacy course developed by the University of Malta.

OpenAI has also signed similar agreements with Estonia, providing ChatGPT Edu to secondary school students and teachers, and launched “OpenAI for Greece” in partnership with the government of Greece.
