Anthropic’s Mythos 5 Freeze Ends, But U.S. Control Over AI Deepens

Anthropic can restore Mythos 5 access for selected U.S. critical infrastructure organizations after the government lifted part of its earlier block.

Anthropic said on X that the U.S. government cleared it to redeploy Mythos 5 to a limited group of domestic organizations involved in critical infrastructure defense.

The company did not give a number, but Semafor reported that more than 100 U.S. institutions are covered by the decision.

The group includes major corporations and government agencies.

Anthropic said it is moving quickly to restore access and is still working with federal officials to widen availability.

The company also said talks continue over Fable 5, a related model built to bring many Mythos capabilities to public users.

It gave no restart timeline.

On Jun. 12, Anthropic cut off customer access to both models after a U.S. government directive, which the company said covered foreign nationals even if they were inside the United States and worked for Anthropic.

The order followed warnings from Amazon and other companies that the models could be jailbroken and misused by bad actors, according to reports cited in the original account.

U.S. officials were also reportedly concerned that a China-linked group had gained access to Mythos 5.

Semafor reported that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told Anthropic in a letter that safeguards were sufficient to let trusted partners use Claude Mythos 5 again.

“I have determined that appropriate safeguards are in place to permit certain trusted partners to access the Claude Mythos 5 Model,” Lutnick reportedly wrote.

He also said Anthropic had committed to work with the U.S. government on model protocols, standards and releases.

The decision matters because it shows Washington may not treat frontier AI releases as simple commercial rollouts when cybersecurity, foreign access and critical infrastructure are involved. The partial reversal followed roughly two weeks of daily talks between Anthropic and the government, after the Jun. 12 shutdown froze access to Mythos 5 and Fable 5 across the company’s customer base.
