DUKE highway crash: Police confirm two students burnt to death in BMW blaze, survivor hospitalised
KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 — Two university students were burnt to death in a crash involving a car at the Jalan Kuching exit ramp on the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE) here early this morning, while another passenger survived with minor injuries.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said preliminary investigations found that the BMW 328i Sport was travelling from Jalan Duta towards Selayang when it was believed to have been speeding before the driver lost control, skidded, and crashed into the left road divider, causing the vehicle to catch fire.
He said the victims were two Malaysian students — the 22-year-old male driver, a student at Queensland University of Technology, Australia, and the 21-year-old male front passenger, a Sunway University student.
“Both victims were confirmed dead at the scene, believed to have been trapped inside the burning vehicle,” he said in a statement today.
The survivor, a 20-year-old Singaporean male student, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment.
Zamzuri said identification of the two charred victims will be carried out through deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) analysis.
He added that police are conducting further investigations at the scene, including reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage and recording statements from the survivor.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Earlier reports said two people were burnt to death after the car skidded and caught fire at the same location. — Bernama
