  • With the resignation of Ma and Beek, the Ethereum Foundation has lost five prominent developers and researchers so far this year.
  • Ma announced his departure from the Ethereum Foundation in a post on X, writing, that the organization is fantastic, but not suited for his next steps.

Two prominent researchers resigned from the Ethereum Foundation on Monday, increasing the number of high-profile departures at the organization to eight in the last few months. Two Ethereum Foundation researchers, Carl Beek and Julian Ma, have left the organization after four and seven years, respectively.

Beek helped develop the Beacon Chain, which enabled proof-of-stake on the Ethereum network, while Ma worked on the network’s censorship-resistant features and cross-layer bridge algorithms and architecture. With the resignation of Ma and Beek, the Ethereum Foundation has lost five prominent developers and researchers so far this year, with five of them leaving in May alone.

Ma announced his departure from the Ethereum Foundation in a post on X, writing, that the organization is fantastic, but not suited for his next steps. He plans to devote more time to product and growth development. In an X post, Beek announced his impending departure on May 29th, saying he would be spending time with his wife and little son, who is one month old.

Foundation Undergoes Major Leadership and Protocol Restructuring

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, took a stand against user criticism of the blockchain’s long-term roadmap management last year by announcing significant leadership changes and a new direction for the Foundation. Buterin hopes to recruit fresh minds to rework the protocol for increased speed and throughput.

The Ethereum Foundation announced earlier this month that the Protocol Cluster team’s two leaders, Barnabé Monnot and Tim Beiko, would be leaving the organization, while Alex Stokes would be taking a sabbatical.

Key researcher and project manager Josh Stark announced his departure from the organization in April, the same day that Ethereum Foundation contributor Trent Van Epps did the same. Tomasz Stanczak announced his resignation as co-executive director of the organization in February.
