The Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) is a discounted, unlimited-use train pass exclusively for foreign tourists on a temporary visa. It allows unlimited rides on nearly all Japan Railways (JR Group) trains — including most Shinkansen (bullet trains), local trains, buses, and ferries.

•  Perfect if you’re traveling long distances (e.g. Tokyo → Kyoto → Hiroshima).
•  Skip it if you’re staying mainly in Tokyo/Osaka (subways aren’t covered).

What is Covered Under the Japan Rail Pass?

Included:

• Most Shinkansen (Nozomi & Mizuho need a paid surcharge — see note below)
• JR local, express & rapid trains
• JR buses in selected regions
• JR Ferry to Miyajima

Not included:

• Children (6–11): 50% off
• Kids under 6: Free (no seat reservation)

 Revised Prices from 1 October 2026

Heads up: prices are rising from 1 October 2026. JR is raising the nationwide pass by about 5–6%, but only for passes bought through travel agencies and overseas sales agents.

The official site (japanrailpass.net) is holding current prices for now, so a 7-day Ordinary pass stays at 50,000 JPY (~S$403) there, versus 53,000 JPY (~S$427) via agents.
