Arbitrum (ARB) Information
Arbitrum is one of the largest layer-2 blockchains operating on top of Ethereum. Offchain Labs, the developer behind the Arbitrum ecosystem, announced on Wednesday it would be airdropping, or releasing for free to select individuals, $ARB, a new token designed to govern the two Arbitrum blockchains.
In-Depth Token Structure of Arbitrum (ARB)
Dive deeper into how ARB tokens are issued, allocated, and unlocked. This section highlights key aspects of the token's economic structure: utility, incentives, and vesting.
The Arbitrum (ARB) token is an ERC-20 equivalent governance token launched on March 16, 2023. It serves as the primary mechanism for governing the Arbitrum ecosystem, including the Arbitrum One and Arbitrum Nova networks. The token economics are designed to decentralize control of the protocol through the Arbitrum DAO, allowing tokenholders to influence the technical roadmap, treasury management, and ecosystem incentives.
Issuance Mechanism
The ARB token was launched with a fixed total supply of 10 billion tokens. The protocol includes a maximum annual inflation rate of 2% to ensure long-term sustainability and provide a mechanism for future ecosystem funding.
The token contract is an upgradeable proxy that delegates calls to an implementation contract. While the contract includes a "mint" function, it is governed by the DAO. The initial distribution was executed through a combination of airdrops to individual users and DAOs, with the remainder allocated to the treasury, the development team, and investors.
Allocation Mechanism
The initial allocation of the 10 billion ARB tokens was distributed among several key stakeholder groups to balance community ownership with long-term development incentives.
| Category | Percentage of Total Supply | Token Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Arbitrum DAO Treasury | 35.3% | ~3.53 Billion |
| Offchain Labs (Team & Advisors) | 26.9% | ~2.69 Billion |
| Offchain Labs (Investors) | 17.5% | ~1.75 Billion |
| User Airdrop | 11.6% | ~1.16 Billion |
| Arbitrum Foundation | 7.5% | 750 Million |
| Ecosystem Airdrop (DAOs) | 1.1% | 113 Million |
The Arbitrum DAO Treasury represents the largest portion, intended for governance-directed initiatives. The Arbitrum Foundation received 7.5% of the supply, with 50 million ARB made immediately available and the remaining 700 million ARB subject to vesting.
Usage and Incentive Mechanism
Governance Utility
The primary use of the ARB token is governance. ARB holders can participate in:
- On-chain Governance: Enacting changes to smart contracts, amending the Constitution, and authorizing new Orbit Chains via platforms like Tally.
- Off-chain Governance: Participating in preliminary voting and discussions via Snapshot.
- Delegation: Tokenholders can delegate their voting power to other community members to represent their interests.
Ecosystem Incentives
Arbitrum has utilized several programs to drive network growth and user retention:
- Short-Term Incentive Program (STIP): Allocated 50 million ARB to 30 ecosystem protocols to be used as user incentives.
- STIP Backfund: Provided an additional 21.52 million ARB to protocols that were approved but initially unfunded.
- Long-Term Incentives Pilot Program (LTIP): Allocated 45 million ARB to further support ecosystem protocols.
- Gaming Catalyst Program (GCP): A future-facing initiative approved to fund gaming projects with up to 225 million ARB over three years.
Network Fees and Revenue
Currently, ARB is not used as the gas token for Arbitrum One or Nova; transaction fees are paid in ETH. However, the DAO captures "sequencer profits"—the difference between fees collected from users and the costs paid to Ethereum L1 for data availability. These profits are transferred to the DAO treasury.
Locking and Unlocking Mechanism
Locking Mechanism
Tokens allocated to the Offchain Labs Team, Advisors, and Investors are subject to a four-year lockup and vesting schedule. This mechanism is designed to align the interests of the core developers and early backers with the long-term success of the network.
Unlocking Schedule
The vesting for team and investor tokens began with a one-year cliff, with the first major unlock occurring on March 23, 2024. Following the cliff, tokens vest monthly over the remaining three years. The entire initial supply is expected to be fully vested by March 2027.
Based on current projections for 2026, the network experiences regular daily and monthly unlock events:
- Daily Unlocks: Approximately 513,347 ARB tokens are unlocked daily, representing a 0.01% impact on the circulating supply.
- Major Monthly Unlocks: On the 16th of each month (e.g., May 16, June 16, July 16, 2026), a significantly larger batch of 93,159,180 ARB is unlocked, representing a 1.51% impact on the circulating supply.
These regular unlocks primarily consist of allocations for the Offchain Labs team, advisors, and investors, as well as the linear vesting of the Arbitrum Foundation's treasury.
Arbitrum (ARB) Tokenomics: Key Metrics Explained and Use Cases
Understanding the tokenomics of Arbitrum (ARB) is essential for analyzing its long-term value, sustainability, and potential.
Key Metrics and How They Are Calculated:
Total Supply:
The maximum number of ARB tokens that have been or will ever be created.
Circulating Supply:
The number of tokens currently available on the market and in public hands.
Max Supply:
The hard cap on how many ARB tokens can exist in total.
FDV (Fully Diluted Valuation):
Calculated as current price × max supply, giving a projection of total market cap if all tokens are in circulation.
Inflation Rate:
Reflects how fast new tokens are introduced, affecting scarcity and long-term price movement.
Why Do These Metrics Matter for Traders?
High circulating supply = greater liquidity.
Limited max supply + low inflation = potential for long-term price appreciation.
Transparent token distribution = better trust in the project and lower risk of centralized control.
High FDV with low current market cap = possible overvaluation signals.
